Mother's Day mini-shoot Special

For Mother's Day this year, I'm having a special day of mini photo shoots on Saturday, May 2. These are 1/2 hour sessions and are half the price of a normal studio photo session. I have only 2 spots left, so if you're interested, book it! It makes a great Mother's Day gift for Mom, Granny or any special woman in your life.

Baby Feet Photos

Not too much to say here -- just take a look. Is there anything cuter than a newborn's tiny feet? Many of the parents who come in with their little ones want me to focus on the feet. I've been so lucky to photograph a lot of newborns this winter. It's amazing to meet the new additions to a family and to do their first professional photo shoot. Best part of my job is seeing them again and again. :)

A Beautiful Beginning

There's just nothing sweeter about my job than those that start with a maternity photo session. I meet the excited (and usually nervous) couple, get to know them and take some pictures that document what will soon be a distant memory. Life changes so much when you have a baby and I think it's very important to do pregnancy photos because it's such a brief, beautiful time in life. Oh, and then comes the best part: when I get the call or the email that the baby has arrived and they want me to come do the newborn photography session. What an honor! I always get goosebumps when I read or hear the new baby's name. It's really amazing to be a tiny part of this miraculous process of having children.

Here are a few from my maternity shoot last weekend. This beautiful couple is expecting in February, and they were in DC (from Canada) for Obama's Inauguration. Best wishes to you guys!

National Day of Service

In honor of Obama's call for a National Day of Service, I'm heading out to Rock Creek park with my husband and little girl to pick up as much trash and recycling as we can. Join us! We'll be out around Puller Park in Kensington and get as far south as the cold permits. Yes We Can!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone! You know, people tend to think about family and kids photos when the weather is warm outside. But is there anything more precious than a little one all bundled up? After living in Montana for eight years, the cold air just brings back good memories for me. So I never hesitate to get out there and shoot in the cold. My studio is a great spot for winter photography, with evergreens surrounding the property. And there's a huge stone fireplace inside for a cozy, rustic backdrop. Stay tuned for a Valentine's special!

Perfect Age for Photographs?

One of the most common questions I'm asked when people are booking their photo shoot is, "What's the perfect age to photograph a baby?" Well, most photographers will tell you there is no perfect age, and to an extent, I agree. BUT... there is this golden age of babyhood when they're sitting up solidly, but haven't mastered crawling yet. It's usually somewhere between six and nine months. They haven't lost that adorable chubby baby look, but they can sit still for a portrait. They are expressive, curious and beautiful. Last weekend I photographed two different six-month-olds -- here are a couple shots. A little natural light and a sweet baby smile just makes for a perfect photo.

Don't fret if you're reading this and your little one is much younger or way beyond this 'golden age.' Many people like to capture their newborn at an early stage. And toddlers' wild and wonderful personalities are picture-perfect!
